Students get a first-hand look into the physics and mathematics of quantum mechanics, cryptography and how they merge into one of the most exciting topics in contemporary science — quantum cryptography. The Trinidad & Tobago Mathematics Olympiad Competition aims to create, encourage and sustain interest in the study of Mathematics amongst secondary school students. The Competition is not specifically targeted to students with exceptional ability in Mathematics, though such students are expected to perform well. Students with average ability will find many questions within their competence, and other questions to challenge and interest them. The competition is open to students from Forms 2 to Upper 6. There are three levels – Junior (forms 2-3), Intermediate (forms 4-5) and Senior (L6 & U6).<br />

Each participating student would receive a Certificate of Participation, as well as a Personalised
Report identifying the student’s strengths and weaknesses in various topic areas in Mathematics.
Certificates of Distinction would be awarded to the top 15% of students in Trinidad and Tobago
and Special prizes awarded to the top 2% of students in Trinidad and Tobago.
Outstanding students from all three (3) Levels of the TTMO Round I Competition will be
selected to proceed to the TTMO Round II Competition which will be held at The University of
the West Indies in January 2019. The results of the TTMO Round II Competition will then be
used in the selection of a small group of students to undergo training with the view of selecting a
six-member team to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the International Mathematics Olympiad

Trinidad and Tobago Team Leader’s Report
on the
59th International Mathematical Olympiad

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is an annual worldwide mathematical competition for
secondary school students. Countries are represented at the IMO by teams of up to six (6) students, a Leader
and a Deputy Leader. The students sit the competition over two days, with each day involving a four-and-a-half
hour exam consisting of 3 difficult problems. A full solution to each problem is worth 7 points, for a maximum
of 42 points over the two days. The 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) was held in Cluj,
Romania, the home of the very first IMO.
Selection and Preparation
As you know each year, the Trinidad and Tobago Mathematical Olympiad holds a series of examinations to
select and prepare a team to represent the country at the IMO. These examinations are open to students from all
secondary schools across the country.
Two rounds of national competition are available for students’ participation.<br />
<br />
The Round I Competition is
usually held in September and is open to students from Forms One to Six. The competition is held in each
individual participating school, and is divided into three (3) categories: Junior, Intermediate and Senior –
depending on the forms the students are in. A late, shortened registration period resulted in only 2596 students
registering for the competition (down from just over 3000 in the previous year), with 2445 students actually
writing it.
Students who perform well in the Round I competition are invited to sit the Round II competition, which has
two categories: Level I and Level II. This round of competition was held in February this year, at centres
located in UWI, Naparima College, and Bishop’s High School, Tobago. In total, 358 students sat the
competition, with 238 writing Level I and 120 writing Level II.
As is customary, the top students in both levels of the Round II competition were invited to participate in
weekly training sessions, held at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. These three hour sessions,
held from February to May, are meant to train the students, while testing them in order to select the best team to
represent the country at the IMO. Students are taught advanced problem solving strategies and exposed to
Olympiad type problems. A number of team selection tests are given and from the results of these, a team
consisting of up to six (6) students is chosen. Based on the results of this year’s exams, a team of four (4)
students was selected this year. However, one of the students – Joshua Davis of Bishop Anstey & Trinity
College East Sixth Form – had already committed to attending the Caribbean Science Foundation’s Student
Program for Innovation in Science and Engineering (SPISE) in Barbados around the same time as the IMO was
to be held. Once the national team is selected, the level of training is intensified.<br />

The team undergoes a rigorous
two-week training camp just prior to their departure to the host country of the IMO. This year, the camp ran

from June 18th
– 28th in Trinity Hall at UWI. In addition to the three team members, Joshua and three other
students were invited to and attended the training camp, to aid in their preparation for next year’s IMO. The
camp involved three intense sessions of classes each day: 8:30 am to 12:00 noon, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and 8:00
pm to 10:00 pm. The students reviewed theory, learnt new problem solving strategies, and practiced solving
many problems.
Delegation
Trinidad and Tobago’s team consisted of three (3) students, the Team Leader, Dr. Indra
Haraksingh and the Deputy Leader, Mr. Jagdesh Ramnanan.<br />

This year’s competition was held from the 3rd to 14th of July with the participation of 594 students from 107
countries. This year the United States of America, Russia and China teams placed first, second and third

OneNote Class Notebook is an app for setting up OneNote, which provides a platform for teachers to deliver content, work collaboratively and provide private or public feedback to students in a structured, organized manner. The digital notebook is designed to help teachers automate their classroom experiences and be more efficient and productive. Lesson plans, course content, exercises, assignments can all be automatically stored and accessed from anywhere, anytime whether online or offline.</span></div>

A point to note, it that OneNote Class Notebook can ultimately be integrated with learning management systems such as Moodle, Blackboard and Canvas.</span></div>

Web 2.0 tools are internet tools that allow the teacher to create content, interact and collaborate with peers as well as students. The Module allows us to gain competence in the use of Web 2.0 tools to augment our teaching and increase professional collaboration. This included a brief yet relevant exposure to Office 365 and its suite of apps.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">In addition,we discussed the challenges faced by students and other users when using the Internet, especially regarding E-testing.</span><br />

Differentiated instruction refers to an approach to teaching in which educators actively plan for students' individual differences so that all students can optimize their learning potential. In a differentiated classroom, teachers divide their time, resources, and selected technologies to differentiate when delivering instruction to students who have various backgrounds, learning readiness, skill levels, and interests.</span></div>

In this Module we were introduced to methodologies for meaningful integration of technology into our practice. In this preferred, prescribed approach, teaching strategies must be student-centered and technology-driven. Furthermore, we discussed the fact that teachers must be empowered to provide instruction in consciously skilled ways, structure problem tasks, while guiding student understanding and support student collaborative projects.<br />
Although, many of us express the desire to integrate ICT into our practice but lack the ability to include it effectively in our lesson planning. This module is meant to address this pedagogical dilemma by introducing us to the <span style="color: #b45f06;">Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition (SAMR) Model. </span><br />
<br />
The <span style="color: orange;">SAMR</span> is a model designed to help us educators infuse technology into teaching and learning methodologies. It was popularized by Dr. Ruben Puentudura. The model transforms learning by helping teachers to integrate technology effectively in the classroom. Emphasis was placed on giving direction on optimizing technology incorporation into the curriculum, and in determining if the technology is enhancing or transforming the learning.<br />

In this module, we addressed subject-specific approaches to ICT integration in the curriculum. The marriage among ICT, curriculum and pedagogical methodologies was explored. </div>

The module also addressed the critical area of assessment. The preponderance of paper-based assessment instruments in schools is not only costly but is also outdated. Students of today, digital natives no less, are disposed to the use of technology for recreation, entertainment and leisure. Increasingly, educational instruction, research and assessment are being added to this disposition. The module introduces teachers to various electronic assessment options for use in their own classrooms.</div>

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has stated its intention to phase out paper-based assessment and introduce electronic testing (e-testing) for candidates attempting CSEC and CAPE examinations. The module will apprise teachers of the requirements for e-testing as proposed by CXC.</div>

In general, teachers must be aware of policies and be able to articulate in consciously skilled ways how their classroom practices correspond to and support policy. Further, this module encouraged participants to have an in-depth knowledge of national policies and social priorities, and be able to design, modify and implement classroom practices that support these policies. The module also introduced various strategic policies of the Ministry of Education with respect to ICT usage in the nation’s schools. Participants were engaged in articulating operational policies to actualize the strategic intent of the national policies.</div>

It's been quite while since I have lasted posted any information. Well, I have <span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">over fourteen years of experience in the teaching of Mathematics at
the secondary school level in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2008, I played a
significant role in re-establishing the Applied Mathematics program at Fatima
College in Port of Spain, including modules on Statistics, Discrete
Mathematics, Probability and Particle Mechanics. Currently I coordinate the CAPE Pure and Applied Mathematics programmes at Fatima
College. Several of my students have obtained Open and Additional Scholarships
in the CAPE Unit 1 and 2 Pure and Applied Mathematics examinations, achieving
results that have placed them within the top ten in the Caribbean in the 2013,
2014 and 2015 examinations. I am also responsible for preparing students
for the Euclid examinations in collaboration with the University of Waterloo in
Canada, and the annual Mathematics Olympiads held by the Australian Mathematics
Trust and the University of the West Indies. My students’ achievements at the
Mathematics Olympiads led to the award of the Round II Team Prize to Fatima

Trinidad & Tobago Mathematics Olympiad. I have a BSc. in
Mathematics and a Postgraduate Diploma in the Teaching of Mathematics from the
University of the West Indies. Currently, I am pursuing a Masters in
Mathematics for Teachers (MMT) from the University of Waterloo, where, I have so far gained valuable experience in Quantum Mathematics and the use of Mathematical
Software. My primary goal is to provide students with a deeper understanding
of Mathematics and its application in the modern world, thereby underlying the

With its help, you can learn how to solve certain types of algebra problems and how to easily generate complex graphs based on functions.<br />

The program is packed with a wide range of problem samples, a comprehensive help manual, and a very user-friendly interface. You can choose between 3 types of activities: "Work a problem", "Make a graph", and "Run a demo".
